Meet Centrepoint's past Great North Runners

Three young homeless people housed and supported by Centrepoint Derwentside in Durham, ran the 2006 BUPA Great North Run for us.  Carl 18, Claire  21, and James 20, joined Bob, Centrepoint Derwentside Support & Development Worker, in running the world's biggest half marathon.  We caught up with them to find out what motivated them to run and how they got on.

Why did you decide to run the Great North Run?

James: I’ve never run in my life! It’s a good cause though.

Why did you choose to run the half marathon for Centrepoint?

Carl: Because it’s the only thing worth supporting- apart from Sunderland Football club!

How did you find training? Did you train together?

Bob: Difficult! It’s tough! I like to think I’m in pretty good condition anyway but you can’t do something like this without hard work.

How did you become homeless?

Carl: I’m completely blind and used to live in residential schools in Scotland. When I came home to live with my family, things got really bad - I started to argue a lot more with my parents 'cause I’d been used to independence.  We realised I couldn’t carry on living there anymore.

Claire: Family problems-arguments with my Mam and her boyfriend got too much to take.

James: I’m gay and eventually my Mam threw me out after lots of arguments.

How do you feel about Centrepoint?

Carl: Love it. I love being here, I love the staff. Centrepoint give young people not only a shelter, but independence, growth and support.

Claire: I think it’s a great organisation for homeless people. We have somewhere to live and help and support in housing, emotional problems too.

James: It’s a great place to live and it’s so friendly.

Caped Crusader!
